If you are a constant watch follower, then you know by now that 2012 is the year of the Pilot watch for IWC. You will notice that there are more new Top Gun watches other than the older ones, including a non-chronograph automatic with a seven day power reserve, some updated classics, and a new very much modern military look to the timepieces.

All of these watches are very sober IWC Pilot watches with a lot of sales appeal and fancy looks. Those looking for something wildly new are going to be disappointed, but those looking for more variations and modern approaches to classic IWC pilot watch designs and sophistications will be impressed at this year’s productions featured at the SIHH.

There is a new  IWC Spitfire collection of Pilot watches. These have been part of the range for a long time and have been updated in terms of complexity and size. The new new Spitfire models are the Spitfire Chronograph with an in-house chronograph movement and the new Spitfire Perpetual Digital Date-Month Calendar. That one is likely the most interesting of the new Pilot watches as the in-house movement has a nicely integrated perpetual calendar and chronograph that are well managed on the same dial.

IWC Pilots Chronograph Edition Automatic Mens Watch IW378901

This pilot watch features a black ceramic case with a black nylon bracelet. Has black dial with luminous hands and Arabic numeral hour markers. Date and month display at the 3 o’clock position. Chronograph functions and scratch resistant sapphire crystal.

IWC Men’s IW325401 Pilots Watch Vintage 1936 Black Dial Watch

It features a stainless steel case with a black leather strap, black dial with luminous hands and luminous Arabic numeral hour markers, 60 seconds sub-dial at the 6 o’clock position and scratch resistant sapphire crystal.

IWC Men’s IW371702 Pilot Spitfire Chrono-Automatic Watch

A classy and stylish pilot watch with a stainless steel case with a brown leather strap. Has a  silver dial with luminous hands and Arabic numeral hour markers. There are several kinds of new and notable watches:statement pieces, interesting collectables and watches that hold a glimpse of a brand’s future that demand and command everyone’s attention each year. At the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 2012, every brand had at least one of these three kinds of new watches in their lineup.

Statement watches are horological masterpieces that demonstrate a manufacturer’s audacity, knowledge and character. SIHH 2012 this year really pulled a quick one on everyone, sneaking in several surprise watch models that people were not aware were coming out. Here is review of some of the best watches featured at the SIHH 2012.

A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar

A simple glance at the new Lange 1 statement piece from A. Lange & Söhne would leave you wondering what the big deal is about this watch. It is the pure legibility of the perpetual calendar mechanism that brings this watch to life. The month ring encircles the main dial area rotating around all the other indicators. This rotating ring, as simple as it appears, is actually the first of its kind in a wristwatch.

An arrow at the 6 o’clock mark shows what month it is currently, above which is the leap year indicator. The day of the week is a retrograde hand at 9 o’clock mark while the oversized date is obvious. The alignment of all the information keeps everything clear at all times, meaning the hands, windows and rings do not get in each other’s way at all.

Panerai Radiomir 1940 PAM398/399

This year, Panerai paid homage to the first Radiomir 1940 with two special edition watches: the Radiomir 1940 (PAM399) an the Radiomir 1940 Oro Rosso (PAM398).  The most distinctive feature of the new Radiomir 1940 watches is the case, specifically the lugs. Instead of being made from steel wires, the strap attachments are fashioned from block of steel as is the case itself, resulting in stronger and more solid lugs.

The new Radiomir 1940 watches are offered in two color combinations: PAM399 in stainless steel with a black dial and PAM398 in red gold with a brown dial. Design elements are brought back from the past, the round, cambered bezel, the Plexiglas crystal, the cylindrical crown and the screw-down case back.

Rotonde de Cartier Minute Repeater Flying Tourbillon

For its first in-house minute repeater and Cartier skipped other striking mechanisms to go straight to the top of the class, the firm decided to do material research into what would transmit sound best. They settled on grade 5 titanium case, the theory of course being that large but light watches are best,. Another important innovation in this watch is in the nature of the hammers (6 o’clock). With regards to the famous Cartier design, the image of this watch speaks for itself.

 Piaget Altiplano Automatic Skeleton

After taking the claim to the world’s thinnest automatic watch and thinnest automatic mechanical movement, Swiss watchmaker and jeweler Piaget ups the SIHH in 2012. The latest Altiplano watch from the manufacturer is another double record-holder. It is the thinnest automatic skeleton watch at 5.34mm and the movement, calibre 1200S, is the world’s thinnest automatic skeleton movement of 2.40mm.

Van Cleef & Arpels Poetic Wish

The latest high complication from jeweler and watchmaker Van Cleef & Arpels was presented at the 2012 SIHH awards. Aside from being breathtakingly and beautiful, it is  dreamy, playful and incredibly technical. The two Poetic Wish watches ;one for men and one for women represent a continuation of the poetic complications introduced in past years by Van Cleef & Arpels.

The case of the watch is set with D, E and F diamonds, VVS, extraordinary dials engraved in gold, mother-of-pearl sculpting, gem-setting and high watchmaking including a constant force mechanism, a five-minute repeater and three automatons. There is an on-demand retrograde display of time, with the figure of the man or woman moving towards the center of the dial, accompanied by a mother-of-pearl cloud coming from the opposite direction. When they meet, a shooting star emerges and indicates the minutes. In the ladies’ version, a kite takes the place of the star.
